Head of Data Engineering Full Time

RED is currently looking for a Head of Data Engineering to lead a modern cloud data engineering function, with a strong focus on Azure, Databricks, cloud data platforms, and scalable data delivery. This role would suit someone operating at Head of Data Engineering, Data Engineering Manager, who can lead teams, shape technical direction, and support the delivery of a modern Azure-based data platform.

Contract details

• Role: Head of Data Engineering
• Duration: Initial 12 Month Contract
• Location: Hybrid in London, 3 days per week on-site
• Start Date: ASAP
• Workload: Full-time

Key responsibilities

You will be responsible for leading the data engineering function and driving the delivery of scalable, reliable, and well-governed data solutions across an Azure cloud environment.

The role will include:

• Leading a team of Data Engineers, Senior Data Engineers and technical specialists
• Owning the technical direction across Azure data platforms and Databricks
• Designing and delivering scalable data pipelines, lakehouse architecture and data products
• Driving best practice across Azure Databricks, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake and wider Azure services
• Working closely with Data Architects, Analytics teams, Product, Engineering and senior stakeholders
• Supporting data platform modernisation, migration and transformation initiatives
• Ensuring strong engineering standards across PySpark, SQL, Python and Databricks workflows
• Improving data quality, platform performance, CI/CD, documentation and operational support processes
• Providing technical leadership around cloud data architecture, governance and delivery standards

Key skills required

• Strong experience in Data Engineering leadership
• Strong hands-on or technical leadership experience with Azure Databricks
• Strong Azure cloud data platform experience
• Experience with Azure Data Factory
• Experience with Azure Data Lake / ADLS
• Strong experience with Spark / PySpark
• Strong SQL and Python knowledge
• Experience designing and delivering scalable data pipelines
• Strong understanding of lakehouse architecture and modern data platforms
• Experience leading engineering teams and setting technical standards
• Strong stakeholder management experience
• Good understanding of CI/CD, DevOps, data governance and data quality principles
