This role is offered as either a permanent full‑time position or a 12‑month secondment opportunity full-time, part-time role can be considered as long as it meets the need of the service.The Band 6 Ward Sister provides clinical and professional leadership to the ward team, supporting the delivery of safe, high‑quality, and compassionate patient care. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.ResponsibilitiesDetailed job description and main responsibilitiesIn this role you will support the Senior Sister in the operational and clinical leadership of the ward/unit, ensuring safe, effective and high-quality patient care.Your Key Responsibilities Will IncludeSupporting the Senior Sister in the management of the ward/unit, ensuring high standards of patient care are maintained across a 24-hour service.Acting as a clinical role model, providing leadership, supervision and support to nursing and support staff.Planning, implementing and evaluating patient care, ensuring clear communication with the multidisciplinary team and patients’ families.Promoting a culture of continuous improvement, patient safety and infection prevention, ensuring Trust policies and professional standards are followed.Supporting staff development by acting as a mentor for new staff, learners and students, helping to create a positive learning environment.Assisting with ward management responsibilities, including rota coordination, incident management, recruitment and participation in staff appraisal processes.Acting up for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse when required and contributing to the coordination of ward activities.What Experience And Skills You’ll NeedTo succeed in this role, you’ll need to demonstrate:Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and a commitment to maintaining professional standards of practice.Experience working in a clinical environment within your specialty, with the ability to demonstrate sound clinical judgement.Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and support a multidisciplinary team.Experience supporting staff development, mentoring learners or supervising junior staff.A commitment to delivering patient-centred care, promoting safety, and continuously improving services.Additional informationThis role may require participation in shift work to support a 12-hour service.The post holder will be required to follow Trust policies relating to infection prevention, safeguarding, confidentiality and health & safety.Successful applicants will be subject to the appropriate pre-employment checks, including professional registration verification.Person specificationQualifications, Knowledge And ExperienceEssential criteriaQualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)Registered nurse on appropriate part of the registerSignificant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant specialityWard management experienceKnowledge of current issues within acute Health ServiceExperience in an acute hospital settingProvide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practiceProvide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practiceAbility to demonstrate clinical decision making and judgementCommitment to the post and Care Group responsibilitiesCommitment to continuing professional developmentDesirable criteriaExperience in handling adverse events and complaintsAppraisal skillsAct in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as neededSome insight into budget managementSkills and competenciesEssential criteriaMicrosoft Office skillsCommunicationSelf-motivatedProblem solvingDelegationLeadershipMotivationalTeamworkPrioritisationGeneral IT skillsTrust ValuesEssential criteriaPatients FirstAlways ImprovingWorking Together
