The role
We are seeking a research scientist who is highly experienced in the field of organic residue analysis of heritage materials through the use of gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and compound-specific isotope ratio mass spectrometry, including the use of a thermal separation probe. Under the direction of the academic leads, the role will involve working across a number of research projects, including supporting in the development of project design of external collaborators applying to use our services (Centre for Chemical Characterisation in Heritage Science; C3HS) through the AHRC RICHeS Access fund, or other sources. The role will also involve extraction, instrumental analysis and interpretation/reporting of organic residues, as well as providing training and support to other users. These projects may include a range of heritage materials, including pottery absorbed residues, paintings and amorphous visible deposits on heritage objects. The role may include protocol development to support specific needs, as well as preparation of organic residues for compound-specific radiocarbon dating.
The position is funded for a fixed term of 2 years and 3 months with a starting date of June 2026. Further funding may become available to extend this employment.
What will you be doing?
The postholder will undertake sample preparation and analysis of heritage materials, involving innovation and validation of new analytical solutions and protocols. They will prioritise project tasks and liaise with internal and external collaborators to bring projects to fruition. They will carry out extraction, instrumental analysis and interpretation/reporting of organic residues, as well as providing training and support to other users.
The postholder will proactively liaise with potential users and stakeholders of the C3HS service and support users in the development of applications, the design of multi-analytical projects and support them through analysis, interpretation and output creation. They will present opportunities and scientific findings at public, specialist and non-specialist forums. They will also undertake their own personal development including training and development opportunities.
You should apply if
You hold a PhD in analytical chemistry, scientific archaeology or a related discipline or equivalent professional qualification/experience or be working towards one.
You have experience in the sampling and molecular analysis of cultural objects
You have well-developed analytical chemistry skills including molecular characterisation, with relevant experience in the use of GC-MS (quadrupole), GC-HRMS and GC-C-IRMS, including the use of pyrolysis and TSP coupled to chromatographic and mass spectrometric instruments.
You are able to develop, validate, implement and monitor standard operating and QA procedures.
You have the ability to pro-actively and creatively implementing wet chemical and instrumental solutions to solve complex problems in analytical chemistry.
You have relevant experience of mass spectral data interpretation and managing databases.
You are able to organise your own time and work, to meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities with attention to detail.
