Pharmacy Support Worker (Acute/Mental Health Sites Only) – Pharmacy Services Full Time

The Queen Elizabeth University Hospital is one of the largest acute hospitals in the UK and home to major specialist services such as renal medicine, transplantation and vascular surgery, with state-of-the-art Critical Care, Theatre and Diagnostic Services. The Royal Hospital for Children is adjoined to the adult hospital and has 244 paediatric beds with a further 12 neonatal beds in the maternity unit. This hospital provides a large number of specialist services to the West of Scotland and the wider population of Scotland in addition to a full range of secondary care services including cardiology and cardiac surgery, renal and bone marrow transplantation. For a number of these services, the children’s hospital is recognised as the sole provider in Scotland. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join our friendly and supportive pharmacy team in the delivery of clinical pharmacy services within each specialty ensuring the safe and effective supply of medicines to patients. You will be an integral member of the pharmacy team working in the main pharmacy department and at ward level liaising closely with the wider multidisciplinary team. We have a number of near patient dispensing areas in the Adult and Children’s hospitals that you will have the opportunity to work in on a rotational basis.

The successful candidate will undertake an SVQ in Pharmacy Services Group Award (at SCQF level 6) as per the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) requirements for the education and training of pharmacy support staff. They will also complete a comprehensive on the job training programme which lasts on average 18 months to be fully proficient within the pharmacy support worker role.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

• Rotation between Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Children
• 11:00 to 18:30 rotational shift pattern
• Participation in weekend work and Public Holidays on a rota basis

Key Responsibilities

• Play a vital role in supporting frontline clinical teams by ensuring wards, theatres and departments are consistently stocked with the right medicines, in the right place, at the right time
• Deliver a highquality dispensing service for inpatients, outpatients and clinical trials, working accurately and safely under the supervision of registered pharmacy professionals
• Take responsibility for ward topup services, using your knowledge of medicine usage to maintain stock levels, reduce waste and support safe patient care
• Support the smooth running of the dispensary and distribution services by receiving, checking, storing and issuing medicines in line with SOPs and legal requirements
• Be a key point of contact for pharmacy customers, responding to queries professionally and providing excellent customer service to colleagues, patients and suppliers
• Work confidently with pharmacy IT systems, automated cabinets and stock control processes to maintain accurate records and support efficient service delivery
• Contribute to a supportive pharmacy team environment, communicating effectively, taking initiative in managing your workload, and committing to ongoing learning and development

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

• A proficient level of general education at National 5/Standard Grade level or above is essential
• Proficient IT skills, including typing and knowledge of Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel), email systems (Outlook), are essential
• Experience in using stock control systems is desirable, along with the ability to plan and organise workload to meet the demanding needs of the service
• Previous experience in healthcare/ pharmacy or a customer-facing role is also desirable
