The Role
Landscape Observatory is looking for a GIS professional to manage a new team of GIS technicians. This is an excellent opportunity for a GIS professional with a track record of successful project management, eager to build a long-term career in GIS as applied to landscape-scale conservation management. You’ll be an important team member in a groundbreaking project to train AI to produce accurate land cover maps for ecosystem modelling and management outcome monitoring of protected landscapes covering 25% of England.
In the role, you will be part of the Landscape Observatory team, based in the Peak District National Park. You will be responsible for leading a new team in the preparation and digitisation of aerial imagery for AI training. You will work with our academic partners at Cranfield University and UK protected landscape teams on the validation of digital maps and datasets for protected landscapes, feature mapping, helping to develop ecosystem and climate change impact modelling, research and a range of monitoring campaigns.
If successful, you will spend the first six to eight weeks full-time working in our Bakewell Office with an option to take advantage of blended working (from home or other suitable base) up to two days per week after the initial period. The role is for an initial 12-month period, with potential for extension dependent on further funding being secured.
About You
A calm and confident professional, you will have a high level of GIS skills and an excellent understanding of GIS data management, quality assurance and verification processes. You will be able to project manage a workstream process and support a new team to digitise habitats and landscape features, verifying third-party data layers with a high degree of accuracy from aerial photography of land cover based on our new schema. Working collaboratively with other team members, academic partners and protected landscape teams, you will help set and maintain consistent high standards of working with spatial data, including training and support, and help resolve technical issues.
