Job Title: Gate Person / Traffic Marshall

GRAHAM is recruiting an experienced Gate Person / Traffic Marshall to join our Building Division as part of the delivery of a £28m upgrade project at the National Railway Museum in York.

This is a high-profile, complex construction environment requiring a reliable and professional individual who can support safe, efficient site operations from the main site entrance.

This is a fixed-term position initially for 12 months, with the potential to extend to 18–24 months depending on project requirements. Flexibility with working hours is essential, with typical hours expected to fall between 07:30am and 5:30pm.

Reporting to the Site Management Team, you will play a key role in controlling site access, managing traffic movements, and ensuring that all deliveries, personnel, and visitors comply with site procedures and safety standards. Your contribution will be vital to maintaining site security, cleanliness, and strong working relationships with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

• Unlocking and preparing the main site gates to allow controlled access and egress
• Opening the turnstile in readiness for workforce arrival
• Directing all personnel arriving on site to the appropriate location in line with site procedures
• Logging all deliveries entering and leaving the site accurately
• Conducting delivery driver inductions in accordance with site requirements
• Obtaining and retaining copies of delivery drivers’ certificates of competency
• Ensuring all driver logs, inductions, and associated documentation are correctly filed and maintained
• Undertaking general housekeeping duties to maintain a high standard of cleanliness within the site compound and site entrance area
• Maintaining cleanliness around the site entrance, including regular litter picking in the surrounding area
• Liaising with subcontractor supervisors to notify them promptly of delivery arrivals
• Cleaning lorry wheels on exit from site on a daily basis, involving physical activity, manual handling, and general labour duties
• Ensuring areas outside the site boundary are consistently maintained to a pristine standard
• Confidently refusing site entry to deliveries that have not been pre-booked or authorised
• Confidently instructing drivers to move on where vehicles are parked inappropriately outside the site
• Maintaining professional and positive working relationships with all stakeholders at all times
• Closing down the turnstile at the appropriate times
• Securing and locking the main gates at close of site operations
• Carrying out all duties in a reliable, flexible, and constructive manner as directed

Essential Criteria

• Proven experience in a Traffic Marshall / Gate Person role
• Ability to work independently and use own initiative
• Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills
• Sound administrative skills with a clear understanding of the importance of accurate paperwork
• CPCS-trained operators must hold A73 on their competency card
• NPORS-trained operators must hold N403 on their competency card
• Basic IT skills, particularly experience using tablets or similar devices with apps

Desirable Criteria

• General knowledge of construction and maintenance works
• Full UK Driving Licence
