Bioinformatician – Laboratory Genetics Full Time NEW

The Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Bioinformatician to join the Laboratory Genetics department within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, based at the state of the art Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. This role sits at the heart of genomic diagnostics, supporting high quality, patient focused care through the development and delivery of advanced bioinformatic pipelines. Working within one of the largest genetics laboratories in Scotland, you will contribute to services supporting patients across the West of Scotland and beyond. NHSGGC offers a collaborative, forward thinking environment where innovation, learning and professional development are actively encouraged. You will work closely with highly experienced scientific, clinical and IT colleagues within a large and complex diagnostic service. This role offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact on patient outcomes while developing specialist expertise in genomic bioinformatics.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and validate bioinformatic pipelines for the analysis of next generation sequencing data
• Transform complex genomic and statistical data into annotated outputs for clinical reporting
• Ensure bioinformatic processes comply with quality standards, accreditation requirements and data governance regulations
• Provide highly specialised bioinformatics advice and support to scientific and clinical colleagues
• Monitor data quality and implement robust quality control and version control systems
• Contribute to service development, validation of new tools and continuous improvement initiatives
• Support training and knowledge sharing across the Laboratory Genetics service

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

• MSc or equivalent postgraduate qualification in bioinformatics or a human genetics discipline with significant bioinformatics content
• Significant experience developing and implementing bioinformatic tools and pipelines in a diagnostic or research setting
• Strong knowledge of next generation sequencing technologies and bioinformatic analysis methods
• Experience of programming and scripting languages such as Python C++ Java or similar
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to manage and interpret very large complex data sets
• Ability to work autonomously while contributing effectively within a multidisciplinary diagnostic service
• Commitment to continuous professional development and maintaining high standards of patient focused care
