Work Experience (Mayor’s Office)
Hours: A full time placement of 37 hours per week for either 1 or 2 weeks, or part time (1-3 days a week) for a longer period.
Placement dates: Between July and September 2026
Placement suitable for: college or university students as well as adults considering career change or return to work
The Organisation
The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority was established as a new organisation in early 2024. It is a public sector employer with access to powers and funding to unlock transport and housing improvements, boost skills provision and help the economy transition to net zero for York and North Yorkshire. The Mayor also holds responsibilities in relation to Policing, Fire and Crime. Making the most of the combined strengths of the city region and rural powerhouse, the Combined Authority is a long-term commitment to shaping a brighter future for generations to come.

The Opportunity
The York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority is currently taking applications for work experience opportunity with Mayor’s Office. The Mayor’s Office is a small, high‑performing team dedicated to serving the Mayor directly, working at pace to deliver his ambitions and long‑term vision for the region.
We focus on turning priorities into action through detailed policy development, research, and strategic advice, while engaging closely with colleagues across the Combined Authority to drive progress.
The team also works hand‑in‑hand with external stakeholders, partners and government to secure the best outcomes for the region. Operating at the sharp end of the organisation, no two days are ever the same – from responding to government announcements and supporting major events, to coordinating ministerial visits and handling emerging issues, the Mayor’s Office covers a wide and fast‑moving brief.
This placement offers a unique opportunity to see how the Mayor’s Office operates and to be at the sharp end of decision making in regional government.
