Job context 

The Undergraduate Open Days are a very important recruitment event for the University. Additional help is needed on Friday 27th and Saturday 27th June to support the viewing of the accommodation villages at The Vale, Selly Oak and Pritchatts Park.

Job Summary 

Providing support at an accommodation village to assist future students attending the Undergraduate Open Days. Helping with directions, viewing show flats and providing information about living on campus.

Main duties 

• Assisting future students and their guests to view accommodation at the University’s accommodation villages and will be based at either The Vale Village, Selly Oak Village or Pritchatts Park Village
• Assisting with set up and pack down, including moving furniture and equipment
• Providing correct information and answering questions accurately to help inform visitors and to comply with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) regulations
• Following Health and Safety, Child Protection, Safeguarding and Code of Conduct guidelines

Person Specification

• Currently undertaking academic study at the University of Birmingham or about to graduate
• To have lived in the University’s accommodation or have a good knowledge of their locations
• English as a first language standard, plus a good standard of written English
• Able to show diplomacy and initiative to deal with a variety of people and situations
• Enthusiasm for student life and university study
• Able to take initiative and resolve problems when needed
• Approachable with the desire to help others
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Professional approach to work, i.e., organised, punctual and reliable

Further details 

• Many roles require students to work outside and stand for long periods of time
• Applicants must have lived in the University’s or partner accommodation (ideally during their first year of undergraduate study) or have a good knowledge of their locations
• Successful candidates must be willing to prepare in advance for their role if they do not currently have all the knowledge required
• Successful candidates will be required to work for 7 – 8 hours per day between the times of 8.00 am and 4.30 pm. There will be staggered start and finish times
• Prior to working at the event, successful applicants must sign in to watch a recorded briefing. This will allow workers to be brought up-to-date with accommodation information (in accordance with CMA regulations) and is for us to comply with our risk assessments and health and safety guidelines. Once completed, they will be entitled to claim an additional 1-hour payment to be added to the total hours worked.
