At CoMind, we are developing a non-invasive neuromonitoring technology that will result in a new era of clinical brain monitoring. In joining us, you will be helping to create cutting-edge technologies that will improve how we diagnose and treat brain disorders, ultimately improving and saving the lives of patients across the world. The Role:The Optical Engineering team develops and characterises the optical systems at the heart of CoMind’s non-invasive brain monitoring technology. From light source selection and optical component design through to system-level characterisation and sensor integration, the team works at the boundary of photonics, biomedical engineering, and precision instrumentation, directly determining the signal quality and reliability that power CoMind’s clinical algorithms. As an Optical Test Engineer, you will design and execute test plans, build characterisation rigs, develop SOPs, and translate complex measurement data into clear, actionable reports, working closely with research, engineering and manufacturers across the product lifecycle. At CoMind, all team members work at least 4 days per week from our new Kings Cross offices, plus a flexible work-from-home day.Responsibilities:Design and execute characterisation test plans for optical and optoelectronic components, sub-systems, and complete device assemblies, from initial concept through to manufacturing releaseBuild and maintain characterisation systems, including hardware interfacing, instrument control, and automated test routines in PythonDevelop and own Standard Operating Procedures for characterisation methods, ensuring repeatability, traceability, and compliance with medical device quality requirementsDesign and conduct Verification and Validation testing in line with CoMind’s design controls, generating the evidence required to support regulatory submissionsProcess and analyse characterisation datasets, extracting meaningful performance insights and identifying failure modes or design risksProduce clear, well-structured test reports and technical documentation for both internal stakeholders and regulatory purposesCollaborate with optical, electronics, software, and clinical teams to ensure characterisation outputs directly inform product design decisionsLiaise with laser and photodetector suppliers to exchange analysis of test dataAI is fundamental to our culture — it’s not just a tool, but a core part of how we work, collaborate, and innovate. We expect all team members to embrace AI in their daily work and continuously find new ways to use it effectively. Skills & Experience:Practical and theoretical skills in laser based optics, with hands-on experience in optical and optoelectronic measurementsProficiency in Python for instrument control, data acquisition, and automated test routinesExperience developing and executing Standard Operating Procedures in a technical environmentStrong analytical skills with the ability to process complex datasets and communicate findings clearly in written reportsWorking knowledge of basic electronic circuits and digital communication protocolsNice to have:Experience in a regulated industry (medical devices, aerospace, or similar) with familiarity with V&V processes and design controlsBackground in interferometry, optical coherence, or biomedical opticsExperience with ISO 13485 or other quality management frameworks. Benefits:Company equity plan so all employees share in the success of the companySalary-sacrifice pension schemePrivate medical, dental and vision insurance (medical history disregarded)Group life assurance at 4x annual incomeComprehensive mental health support, including unlimited access to 1:1 sessions with trained professionalsUnlimited holiday allowance (+ bank holidays) and one week of remote working per quarterLunch voucher (£10) every day for JustEat and free dinner on those days where you need to work laterTwice weekly deliveries of fresh fruit and an extensive selection of snacks and drinksYuLife subscription, allowing you to turn your daily steps and meditation into discounts at a range of storesAccess to Udemy for upskilling and professional development.
