About The Role
This role sits within Children’s Safeguarding and Specialist Services and is responsible for ensuring the Bedfont Lane Children’s Home is maintained to a safe, high‑quality standard that supports positive outcomes for children with disabilities and young people in care. The Handy Person will take ownership of the day‑to‑day maintenance, repairs, and redecoration of the building, working with minimal supervision and responding proactively to issues as they arise.
The role plays a vital part in creating a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment and includes supporting young people leaving care by working alongside them in their own homes to develop practical life skills and confidence towards independent living.
They Will Work On:
- Carrying out general internal and external maintenance, repairs, and redecoration
- Undertaking Health and Safety checks and completing risk assessments
- Working with managers to prioritise repairs, manage budgets, and resolve issues
- Maintaining a safe, hazard‑free environment for residents and staff
- Supporting young people in care and care leavers to develop basic independence skills
The Role Offers Opportunities For Growth Through:
- Gaining further Health and Safety and specialist training
- Developing mentoring and coaching skills with young people
- Working collaboratively across teams and services
- Expanding practical and safeguarding knowledge within a residential care setting

About The Team You’ll Be Working In
The Children’s Safeguarding and Specialist Services team is dedicated to protecting and promoting the welfare of vulnerable children and young people. Its core purpose is to provide safe, nurturing, and high-quality care environments that support children’s development, emotional wellbeing, and long-term outcomes.
You’ll Be Joining a Newly Formed, Forward-thinking Residential Care Team That’s Committed To Delivering High-quality, Child-centred Care. Led By The Residential Group Manager, The Team Will Include:
- Residential Manager
- Deputy Managers
- Senior Residential Support Workers
- Residential Support Workers
- A Chef/Cook
- A Handyperson
- A Domestic Cleaner
Together, you’ll work collaboratively to uphold the highest standards of care, guided by Hounslow’s values and the Children’s Homes Regulations 2015. The team is passionate about safeguarding, inclusion, and empowering children and young people to achieve their full potential.
You’ll also work closely with social workers, education providers, healthcare professionals, and families to ensure holistic support and continuity of care.
This Team Plays a Vital Role In:
Delivering statutory care and safeguarding responsibilities
Ensuring compliance with national regulations and Ofsted standards
Creating tailored care plans that reflect each child’s individual needs and aspirations

About You
- You’re someone who takes real pride in keeping places safe, well cared for, and welcoming.
- You understand how much a well‑maintained environment matters to children and young people in care, and you’re motivated by knowing your work directly contributes to their safety, comfort, and wellbeing.
- You may already have experience working in maintenance within residential or care settings, or you may be looking for a practical role where your skills can truly make a difference. Either way, you’re dependable, proactive, and comfortable working independently, while also valuing being part of a supportive team that puts children and young people first.
- You’re confident working in a busy environment where priorities can change, and you’re able to respond calmly to everyday issues as well as urgent repairs.
- You communicate respectfully with staff and young people, understand the importance of boundaries and privacy, and can work sensitively alongside young people, including those with disabilities or challenging behaviour.
- You’re organised and safety‑focused, with a good understanding of Health and Safety responsibilities, risk assessments, and the importance of maintaining a hazard‑free environment.
- You’re reliable, flexible in your approach, and willing to be available for on‑call or emergency repairs when needed.
- You’re open to learning, happy to undertake training, and comfortable using basic digital systems to record work and checks. Above all, you care about doing a job well and want to be part of a team that values consistency, responsibility, and making a positive difference to the lives of Hounslow’s children and young people.
Essential For This Role:
Enhanced DBS is required for this role.
