Job title: Fuel Poverty Adviser (Energy Adviser)Contract: Full-time, 2-year fixed termLocation: North London (community-based with some hybrid working)
Power Up North London is recruiting a full-time Fuel Poverty Adviser to provide compassionate, practical energy support to fuel-poor households in Archway, Upper/Lower Holloway, Hornsey and nearby areas. The role suits someone empathetic, patient and highly organised who wants to make a tangible difference for vulnerable residents during the cost-of-living and climate crises.
About the role
You will set up and lead the service as the main point of contact for residents needing help with energy bills, home comfort and related issues. The service will run through trusted local venues such as foodbanks, churches and community centres. Many residents may be in crisis, have limited English or face multiple vulnerabilities, so a warm, non-judgemental manner and clear communication are essential. You will offer one-to-one advice, group sessions, home visits and light-touch outreach, and systematically record and follow up interactions so residents receive consistent support. You will also help build team capacity and manage relationships with host sites. The role reports to the CEO of Power Up North London.
Key responsibilities
Proactively develop the service, generating leads and engaging residents in the target areas to take up support.
Welcome residents and build trust, listening carefully to their concerns and explaining options in clear, accessible language.
Provide one-to-one energy advice at weekly face-to-face sessions (drop-ins and appointments) and by phone/online, helping residents understand bills, meters and tariffs and resolve problems.
Carry out home visits for the most vulnerable households to complete simple home energy checks and install small energy-saving measures such as LED bulbs, draught-proofing and radiator reflectors.
Offer practical guidance on damp, mould and condensation, ventilation, overheating and staying warm and well at home, including behaviour changes that reduce energy use.
Help residents access discounts and support schemes (e.g. Warm Home Discount, Cold Weather Payments, Water Help) and signpost to services such as SHINE, Citizens Advice, Age UK and debt or income-maximisation support.
Systematically follow up cases to support residents through to resolution wherever possible.
Support light-touch outreach at community events, stalls and festivals, sharing quick tips and resources and encouraging residents to book 1:1 sessions.
Deliver group energy awareness workshops and promote sessions with flyers, posters and social media alongside host organisations.
Support the training and day-to-day guidance of volunteer Energy Champions.
Keep accurate, up-to-date records of all interactions, measures installed, referrals and estimated financial and carbon savings using a CRM system, and flag where further support is needed.
Work towards pre-determined, ambitious delivery targets (e.g. home visits, advice appointments, events and workshops) while maintaining high-quality, person-centred support.
Person specification
Essential
Strong empathy, patience and emotional resilience, with the ability to support people who may be distressed, frustrated or under significant pressure.
Excellent communication skills, able to explain complex information simply and adapt your style for different audiences, including people who may not speak fluent English.
Highly organised and systematic, with proven ability to manage a caseload, keep good records and reliably follow up with clients and partners.
Experience of working directly with vulnerable people or communities (e.g. low-income households, older people, migrants, people with health conditions).
Confident using IT systems (email, databases/CRM) and willing to learn new tools for monitoring and reporting.
A genuine interest in fuel poverty, energy saving and community-led climate action.
Desirable
NEA Level 3 Award in Energy Awareness (or similar energy advice qualification); if you do not have this, you must be willing to undertake training and assessment funded by Power Up North London.
Experience delivering energy or welfare advice (e.g. energy use, debt, benefits, housing or financial wellbeing).
Experience installing small energy-saving measures in homes or carrying out basic home energy assessments.
Ability to speak an additional community language commonly used in North London.
Familiarity with relevant local services and networks (e.g. SHINE, Citizens Advice, Age UK, local foodbanks and faith/community organisations).
