Main duties of the job

A unique opportunity has arisen to join the ENT service at University Hospital Southampton as a consultant ENT surgeon with interests in head and neck surgery and laryngology.

You will join a team of head and neck surgeons and laryngologists providing comprehensive services to the local population and tertiary care to a population extending across Hampshire, Wiltshire and Dorset. You will work alongside a well established MDT including SALT, dietetic, Radiology, Pathology and CNS teams.

The post would suit an established and experience consultant surgeon with a strong commitment to clinical excellence, innovation and compassionate care.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

You will be actively involved in the head and neck 2 week wait pathway and management of patients with upper aerodigestive tract malignancies. Additionally, there is the opportunity to become involved in laryngology including voice clinics and management of patients with upper airway stenosis.

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or equivalent
• Higher Qualification in specialty i.e. FRCS

Desirable criteria

• 5 years post cct experience
• Entry on GMC Specialist Register; eligible for entry on Register or within six months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria

• Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
• Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Otolaryngology
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range head and neck surgery
• Wide experience in ENT
• General ENT experience in Elective and Emergency outpatient and operative surgery
• Experience of working in the UK
• Substantive experience as a consultant surgeon
• Experience of delivering a head and neck diagnostic service
• Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
• Specific experience of MDT working in a head and neck team
• Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
• Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
• Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances including working under pressure and a demanding environment, which may change rapidly
• Evidence of supervising in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research
• Evidence of ability to teach clinical skills
• Ability to organise and manage eg outpatient priorities/theatre lists
• Ability to manage and lead others
• Experience of audit management
• Ability and willingness to work within the Trust and NHS performance framework and targets

• Experience in Airway surgery for upper airway stenosis
