There are jobs that pay the bills.
There are jobs that build careers.
And then there are the rare ones —
the ones you tell your grandchildren about.
This is the third kind.
─────────────────────
Symptom Spectrum is a UK registered medical
AI company building OurSkin Spectrum® —
the dermatology AI platform built to work
reliably across all skin tones, for
all communities.
We hold a registered trademark.
A filed patent.
A peer-evaluated AI methodology tested on
Isambard-AI — the UK’s most powerful
supercomputer.
We are not patching a broken system.
We are rebuilding the foundation.
─────────────────────
THE WORLD THIS ROLE EXISTS IN
For too long, the systems meant to read
your skin were written for only a fraction
of the world’s population.
Ethnically diverse communities —
the global majority — were left out
of the training data, the research,
and the tools designed to help them.
Dr James Pope at the University of Bristol
proved it — peer-reviewed, published,
presented to academia, government and media —
using Isambard-AI, the UK’s most powerful
supercomputer.
Skin cancer AI recall for darker skin: 0.26
For lighter skin: 0.45
A 43% performance gap.
In a tool designed to save lives.
Not because of bad medicine.
Not because of bad doctors.
Because the images were never built.
The training was never done.
The foundation was always incomplete.
That is what we are here to fix.
And this role is at the centre of it.
─────────────────────
WHAT THIS ROLE ACTUALLY IS
This is not a job description.
It is an invitation.
You will be the clinical backbone of
a company at the intersection of AI,
medicine, community and equity.
You will not be handed a process.
You will build one — and it will matter
long after you have moved on.
─────────────────────
WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH
You sit at the intersection of every
team we have:
· Our academic consortium — including
Dr James Pope, University of Bristol.
You translate research into protocol
and science into structure.
· Our machine learning and AI team —
your annotated, GCP-compliant image data
is what OurSkin Spectrum® learns from.
Your work shapes the model.
· Our NHS and clinical validation partners —
coordinating validation studies and
ensuring our methodology meets the
standards for NHS deployment.
· Our regulatory and compliance team —
building the MHRA Class IIa pathway.
DPIA, study files, consent templates —
you author the backbone of our
regulatory submission.
· Our West African academic and hospital
research network — building partnerships
that give us access to the image data
that does not exist anywhere else.
This is the data the world is missing.
· Our community outreach programme —
working alongside our Navigator network
in faith communities and community spaces
across the UK. The people most affected
by this gap will be the first to benefit
from closing it. Community is not a
footnote here. It is the foundation.
─────────────────────
WHAT WE OFFER
· Work that is genuinely, measurably
consequential — you will point to
the foundation you built
· Direct access to the founder and
leadership from day one —
no layers, no politics
· A seat at the table across academic,
NHS, regulatory and community conversations
· The chance to shape a company’s entire
scientific culture from the beginning
· Colleagues who are here for the
same reason you are
─────────────────────
WHAT YOU WILL BUILD
· A consented, clinically structured
image dataset that does not yet exist
anywhere in the world
· The GCP-compliant documentation framework
for our MHRA Class IIa regulatory pathway
· Clinical validation activities against
pre-specified performance metrics
· Our West African research partnership
programme
· Scientific sections of NIHR and
Innovate UK grant applications
─────────────────────
WHO YOU ARE
Essential:
· MSc in Biomedical Science or a closely
related life sciences discipline
from a UK university
· GCP certified
· Laboratory research and GLP documentation
experience
· Strong scientific writing capability
· Comfortable across academic, clinical
and commercial environments
· Authorised to work in the United Kingdom
Desirable:
· Experience with MHRA pathways or
SaMD frameworks
· Knowledge of or connections to West African
clinical or academic research institutions
─────────────────────
We particularly welcome applications from
candidates with lived experience of the
health inequalities we are working to address.
Not a better caterpillar. A butterfly.
