The Role
We are seeking a confident and experienced Senior Ecologist to join us on a permanent basis. This is a key role within the business, combining technical delivery, field leadership and support for the wider team.
You will take the lead on ecological surveys, support and mentor junior staff and ensure that all work is delivered to a consistently high standard. You will also contribute to project planning, client communication and the continued development of our ecology services.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the planning and delivery of ecological surveys, including Preliminary Ecological Appraisals, protected species surveys and habitat assessments
Provide technical oversight and quality assurance of survey data, reports and outputs
Support, mentor and oversee the work of junior ecologists in both fieldwork and reporting
Act as a key link between senior management and field teams, translating project requirements into clear and deliverable tasks
Oversee field logistics including access, accommodation and equipment and adapt to changing site conditions
Ensure all work aligns with current legislation, guidance and best practice
Act as a key point of contact for clients, contractors and project teams
Identify risks and constraints and support the development of practical, workable solutions
Contribute to ecological reports, including impact assessment and mitigation recommendations
Support continual improvement across the team and wider business
About You
You will be a confident and capable ecologist who combines strong technical ability with a practical, solutions focused approach. You will be comfortable leading work in the field, supporting others and remaining calm and professional in challenging or changing environments.
Essential
Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science or related discipline
Strong experience in ecological survey and assessment
Experience leading field surveys and supervising or supporting others
Good understanding of UK environmental legislation and guidance
Membership of CIEEM (Associate or Full)
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel where required
Experience with GIS and ecological data handling
Experience with Biodiversity Net Gain or similar approaches
Desirable
Protected species licences
Experience on large or complex projects
