About This Role

New Hall School is seeking to appoint an Assistant Head of Boarding. This is an exciting opportunity to join a large and thriving boarding community within the largest Catholic independent boarding and day School in the UK. The Assistant Head of Boarding (AHoB) plays a key role in delivering outstanding pastoral care and leadership, supporting the development and wellbeing of boarders within a nurturing and values-driven environment. The role is likely to be based in one of the School’s Houses for Years 5-11.

The AHoB is expected to uphold and actively promote the Catholic ethos of the School, contributing meaningfully to its spiritual life. This role offers excellent preparation for future leadership positions such as Housemistress/Head of Boarding or Head of Year.

The ability to offer sessions in one of the following areas would be an advantage: Chaplaincy, EAL, Sport, Cookery, Music. TEFL training will be offered and fully funded. The successful candidate will demonstrate patience, empathy and understanding, ensuring the highest standards of care for all boarders while fostering a strong sense of community.

Key Responsibilities:

to deputise for the Head of Boarding (HoB), leading the House team as required, supporting outstanding pastoral care, maintaining high standards and ensuring the House meets the National Minimum Standards for Boarding (NMS)
to contribute to a strong House identity, supporting the promotion, recruitment and retention of boarders, and to represent the House at key events, including engagement with parents
to uphold and promote the Catholic ethos of the School, contributing to its spiritual life through regular involvement in Mass and liturgies, and supporting prayer, reflection and the faith development of boarders, including preparation for Sacraments
to foster a positive, inclusive and respectful House community, promoting high standards of behaviour, supporting the integration of new boarders, and contributing to a varied programme of social, evening and weekend activities
to monitor and support boarders’ academic progress, guide subject choices and aspirations, promote independent learning and intellectual curiosity, and support interview preparation and confidence-building
to promote the holistic development and wellbeing of boarders, encouraging participation across a range of activities, supporting healthy lifestyles and personal responsibility, and developing leadership and independence
to support and help deliver a broad co-curricular programme, encouraging participation and contributing to evening and weekend activities
to safeguard and promote the welfare of boarders, maintaining vigilance at all times, undertaking supervision duties, acting in loco parentis when required, and supporting health and wellbeing
to maintain effective communication with parents and colleagues, ensure accurate record-keeping, contribute to House communications, and support administrative tasks including travel arrangements

Essential

The successful candidate will be expected:

to have a clear understanding of and commitment to the values of a Catholic independent boarding and day School
to demonstrate the ability to contribute to spiritual, moral and faith development
to support and uphold the School’s Mission & Ethos
to have a strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
to hold a university degree
to have (where applicable) a successful track record of teaching up to A Level
to have knowledge or experience of boarding school environments
to have experience of working with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds
to have excellent communication, organisational, IT and management skills
to be able to contribute to co-curricular activities
to demonstrate a genuine professional interest in boarding and pastoral care
to have sound judgement, initiative and common sense
to have the ability to relate effectively to students and demonstrate empathy
to have the ability to create a nurturing and inclusive environment
to demonstrate effective behaviour management skills

Desirable

to be a practising Catholic
to hold Boarding Schools’ Association (BSA) qualification(s)
to hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), where applicable
to have experience as a Boarding Tutor or Boarding Assistant

New Hall School offers an exceptional working environment. The main campus occupies the stunning Grade I listed former Tudor palace of Beaulieu. The School’s conference and events venue is at the Grade I listed Boreham House, one mile away. New Hall is a warm, welcoming, and supportive community, with a staff of around 300.

Beaulieu Park railway station is at the entrance to New Hall’s Avenue: 30 minutes to Stratford and 38 minutes to London Liverpool Street. The Elizabeth Line at Shenfield (13 minutes by train) terminates at Heathrow airport. There are nearby airports: London Stansted, London Southend and London City.
