This post is full time (35 hours per week) and has funding available for 24 months (with the possibility of extension).
The James Watt School of Engineering is seeking to appoint an experienced and highly motivated Semiconductor Epitaxy Research Technologist to play a central role in the operation and future development of the Glasgow Epitaxy Facility. This specialist Facility provides high quality III–V semiconductor wafers for academic and commercial research across photonics, electronics and emerging quantum technologies, and is a core component of the School’s strategic investment in advanced materials and device engineering.
This post offers an excellent opportunity for a skilled epitaxy specialist to take a senior technical and scientific leadership role within a growing national capability. The successful candidate will support the professional operation, optimisation and development of the Facility’s MOCVD system, ensuring the reliable delivery of epitaxial materials to a wide range of research programmes and external partners. You will work closely with academic leads and industrial users to design, grow and characterise advanced semiconductor structures, contributing both to the realisation of specific research outputs and to the long-term advancement of the Facility’s technological capabilities.
You will take responsibility for developing and documenting epitaxial processes, supporting multiple concurrent research and commercial projects, and anticipating future demand by contributing to strategic planning and capability development. You will also play a key role in training and mentoring students and research staff in epitaxy and safe laboratory practice, supporting the development of the next generation of semiconductor technologists.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in semiconductor physics, materials science, electronic engineering or a closely related field, or will have equivalent experience gained in a high technology industrial environment. You will bring specialist knowledge of III–V semiconductor epitaxy and demonstrable expertise in MOCVD growth, combined with strong problem solving ability and a proactive approach to technical innovation. Experience of operating advanced epitaxial growth equipment is essential, as is experience of working in research intensive or commercial technology environments involving complex interdisciplinary projects.
In this role you will also contribute to reporting, documentation, planning and governance activities that support the smooth running and strategic development of the Epitaxy Facility. You will collaborate with academic colleagues, technical staff and industrial clients, therefore excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
